In 1985 after years of consumer pressure, Parliament decided that the public should have a greater choice of the lawyer they employ to undertake their property conveyancing. Licensed Conveyancers were created to compete directly with solicitors and provide a safe and economical service to the public.
In 1989 Steven Mason and Stephen Raffield established Mason Collins and opened their conveyancing practice in Mitcham and within just a few years became one of the busiest conveyancing firms in South London. A combination of computer technology coupled with a strong emphasis on service and efficiency enabled them to attract new clients and establish a significant client base.
After almost twenty years the legal landscape is about to go through another dramatic change with the introduction of mixed legal practices that will enable solicitors, licensed conveyancers and barristers to set up law firms together. A combination of different legal skills operating under the same roof will offer the best possible choice for clients who often require a range of legal services throughout their lifetime.
In November 2008 Mason Collins are merging their conveyancing practice with McMillan Williams to become the firm’s ninth office in the area. Steve Mason comments: “Our strength as specialist property lawyers enabled us to build a significant practice and concentrate on providing a focused service to our clients. By combining our skills and knowledge with a larger firm we can now offer our clients a comprehensive legal service that until now has been entirely restricted to property law“.
The combined firms of McMillan Williams and Mason Collins operating under the McMillan Williams banner will continue to operate from the Mitcham office where the practice was first established.
