When you adopt a child the court makes you that child’s legal parent. All legal rights of the birth family end. An Adoption Order is therefore permanent and cannot be reversed. Any couple who live together may apply to adopt a child. This includes heterosexual and single sex partners who live together as well as people who are married or in a civil partnership. You can adopt if you are a single person.
