Residence/Contact

The Court has the power to make various orders in relation to children. The most common types of court orders are as follows:

  • Residence Orders- these specify who the child/ children should live with.
  • Contact Orders - these specify the amount of contact the children shall have with the parent with whom they do not live. This contact can be by way of telephone calls, letters or even face to face meetings.
  • Specific Issue Orders - these specify how a particular matter involving the children should be dealt with e.g. a child’s education.

  • Prohibited Steps Orders - these prevent any named person from taking certain steps. This includes removing a child from their jurisdiction and taking them abroad without first getting the court’s permission.
  • Care, Supervision and Emergency Protection Orders - see ‘Care Proceedings’ at the end of that section.
