Inquests

When someone that you care about passes away in uncertain circumstances you can sometimes be left wondering what you can do and who you can turn to for answers.

When this occurs it is usual for an Inquest to be held to determine the circumstances of death.

The team at McMillan Williams are experienced in being able to assist and advise you about the Inquest process. We are able to examine medical records and determine the relevant questions to ask to get the answers that you need.

An Inquest is a public hearing held by a Coroner. After someone dies if there are questions surrounding the death then these can be addressed in the Coroners Court. The purpose of the Inquest is to ensure that you receive the answers to the following four questions:-

  1. Who has died?
  2. When did they die?
  3. Where did they die?
  4. How did they die?

To be able to give the answers to these questions the Coroner will hear evidence from the deceased’s friends and family. If the death was in medical circumstances, they will also hear evidence from the medical practitioners involved. We are able to provide you with legal representation during this process. We will be able to ask questions of all the witnesses and to put your views forward before the Coroner.

At the end of the Inquest the Coroner will give answers to the questions above and a specific 'verdict'.
