A seven-year-old girl left disabled after a shocking medical blunder has been awarded £7million compensation - one of the biggest NHS pay-outs ever made.

It comes as new figures show 10 complaints a day are made by mums about poor care at maternity wards. More than £200million compensation was paid out last year due to mistakes.

Ella Bryant-Brand was starved of oxygen and suffered brain damage at birth because midwives and doctors failed to respond when her umbilical cord became wrapped round her neck. The blunder, at Royal Sussex Hospital, Brighton, left her with cerebral palsy. She has limited movement in her limbs, cannot walk unaided and can only say a few words.

But only now, after a seven-year battle with the NHS, has her mum Kim won the multi-million-pound pay-out to give her daughter the round-the-clock care she needs for the rest of her life. FOR TRAGIC ELLA what happened to my daughter. But I have worked through it." The highest NHS payout was £12.4million to dancer Kerstin Parkin, who suffered brain damage.

Amazingly Kim, 38, from Billingshurst, West Sussex - who now wants to help other families with disabled children - bears no grudge towards the hospital. She said: "I have been very, very angry about what happened to my daughter. But I have worked through it." The highest NHS payout was £12.4million to dancer Kerstin Parkin, who suffered brain damage.

Her lawyer Colum Smith, from McMillan Williams, said: "This money will ensure Ella receives the care she needs."
